We look forward to many more informative, passionate discussions about #interprofessional #collaboration.

The next #IPChat will occur on July 14, 2010 at 8PM ET. The focus for that chat will be hosted by the always fabulous @NurseKama and topics will include: Q1 Patient safety and interprofessional collaboration and Q2 Return on investment, social media, and healthcare.

For the official transcript of the entirety of #IPChat 01 you can check out this link. Note, for anyone new to twitter this will probably look confusing and indecipherable so I have broken it down to key elements printed below.

Summary of #IPChat 01:

Q1: What are opportunities for getting different healthcare professionals to participate with social media tools. #IPChat

LindsayMBurke: Q1: I think teaching ppl in healthcare to connect in different ways can be promoted at conferences etc.. to get things started.

nursekama: Q1: Hmm..Good question. I think it depends on what the health professional is using social media for…tons of #nurses using twitter!

CIHC_ca: Q1: Great points! We launched the CIHC Social Media 101 at the @NaHSSA conference in Hamilton. http://bit.ly/cdazR1

seancranbury: Q1: @nursekama @LindsayMBurke What are #nurses using twitter for? Any good ideas to share?

nursekama: Q1: I’d like to see academics from health/social sciences using web2.0 to discuss research to help reduce the research-practice gap.

nursekama: Q1: I’m interested to know what technologies professionals like occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists are using.

Trybarefoot: Q1: A lot of front-line workers are not permitted to use social media at work – need some policy/culture shift in systems.

CIHC_ca: Great point! RT @Trybarefoot: Q1: A lot of front-line workers are not permitted to use social media at work.

nursekama: @seancranbury We share stories/experiences within practice and share evidence-based resources or best practice guidelines #BPG #RNAO

Trybarefoot: Q1: “If we can’ t use it at work – why bother learning about it”?

CIHC_ca: How can we respond to this common reservation? @Trybarefoot: Q1: “If we can’ t use it at work – why bother learning about it”?

nursekama: Q1 @Trybarefoot Great point, we’re fortunate to have great ppl advocating 4 social media policies in hospitals, like @ImpressionOne.

Trybarefoot: Q1: I aim to educate managers/senior leaders re: the opportunities! RT @CIHC_ca: How can we respond to this common reservation?

Trybarefoot: Q1: creating a community of practice for IP facilitators in NS – challenged by the issue of all not having permission to use SM –

seancranbury: @Trybarefoot Great points about ‘permissions’ and overcoming reservations about social media use. We need to dev some strategies.

Q2: What can we do to encourage policy/culture shifts within #healthcare to allow for social media use? Is this merely generational?

nursekama: Q2: My colleague, @rbooth5, shared this with me a while ago: Social media policy generator http://su.pr/24gTJV #IPChat

LindsayMBurke: Q2: I think we need to consider the value added to SM and attract different generations in different way to engage them!

nursekama: Q2 @CIHC_ca I think we have to frame social media as a means for professional development for health professionals in the workplace

seancranbury: @LindsayMBurke re: facilitate developing SM strategies. CIHC blog, wiki, NaHSSa perhaps. A group effort.

seancranbury: RT @Trybarefoot: Q2: Must help teams consider HOW SM can support HOW they provide patient-centred care & HOW they connect as a team.

nursekama: @seancranbury I think the CIHC Wiki (http://cihc.wikispaces.com/) is a good example of collaboration too. You need that community.

Trybarefoot: Q2: Different generations use SM in diff ways – lets ‘get in the heads’ of each & strategize based on what makes ‘em tick!

Trybarefoot: So true! RT @mhnig: Q2 Its a real challenge..when you work with other health professionals who don’t even check their email.

Q3: Will social media adoption/culture/policy only change when the #patient starts demanding it? Can we be better prepared?

LindsayMBurke: Q3: I think BOTH patients and Health Care porviders need to advocate for Social Media use.

PaulaRobinsonRN: @Trybarefoot #IPChat Actaully, My partner doens’t belive in social media, do you believe that?? Can’t get his arms around ROI, but I use it.

CIHC_ca: @TryBarefoot Move toward strategizing for inclusive Social Media use means understanding how we/others use it, what we want from it.

nursekama: Q3 @CIHC_ca Its already in demand! It depends how we look at healthcare as well..what lens? business model = consumer satisfaction?

LindsayMBurke: Does anyone have a great example of how using social media directly enhanced #patient care?

Trybarefoot: Q3: The patient ‘demanding’ it will help – but we need to demonstrate the potential for SM & support “SM champions in health”!

nursekama: @LindsayMBurke @seancranbury ROI and social media – is this a problem for hospitals? health professionals? academics? patients?

Q4: What can we all do before our next #IPChat to help promote social media use in #interprofessional #healthcare?

LindsayMBurke: Q4: I know I want to invite a guest to sit with me and watch me use social media tools to engage in discussion for the next #IPChat.

LindsayMBurke: Q4: Next time around (July 14th&24th) hopefully they will sign up and participate with us for #interprofessional discussion during #IPChat.

nursekama: @LindsayMBurke Great idea! I did that during a #mhsm chat with a colleague! She needed to see how EASY it was to tweet! Loves it now #IPChat

nursekama: Q4: I’m wondering if we could focus the next chat on a patient safety issue as it relates to #interprofessional #collaboration. #IPChat.

For the complete transcript of #IPChat 01 go here.

Have you ever used Wikipedia to learn more about a person, a place, an idea or an event? Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet, with more than 15 million articles having been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world.

Recognizing the value of this type of community-driven database, the CIHC is launching a similar initiative, solely dedicated to Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Collaborative Practice (CP). The goals are simple:

    * provide a forum where any individual or project interested in IPE and CP can create, edit, add to or verify information about themselves or their work
* provide an easily searchable database of IPE and CP people, projects, supporters and research, that anyone can search and reference.

To view the current content in the wiki, visit www.cihc.ca/wiki and either click on one of the Popular Pages in the left hand column or type your search query in the box. You don’t need to join the wiki to take a look around and see what’s there.

To edit existing or add new content, please click ‘Join this Wiki’ on the top right-hand corner of the main page. Within a few hours you will receive confirmation that you’ve been approved as an administrator on the site. This will allow you to edit pages as you choose. Click on help for some simple “how to” type instructions, but don’t be afraid to try out the various options for formatting, adding files and hyperlinking. If you run into trouble, drop us an email at communications[at]cihc.ca or simply save the page you’re working on and we’ll come along and clean it up in a day or two.

Together we can build an accessible, searchable, informative database of key information related to IPE and CP, and make it possible for information and projects to be shared across the country and the world.

Give it a try, the potential is limitless!

Our next big step in growing the community around ideas for improving #interprofessional #collaborative #healthcare is happening on Sunday July 4th at 8PM ET.

You can participate and/or track the discussion live by following #IPChat.

Here’s a breakdown on format for #IPChat 01:

Details:

When: July 4th, 2010 @ 5 pm PT, 8 PM ET
Where: Twitter! #IPChat

Topic: Building the #Interprofessional #Collaborative #Healthcare Social Media Discussion

#IPChat Questions:

To keep the one-hour chat on topic, We’ll be helping guide conversation by using some of the questions below to drive us to share ideas, examples and resources.

If you want to take a peak at where we may go in the conversation, review the questions below.

   1. What kind of communities do you currently work with and what kinds of social media tools do they use?
2. What are some online community organizing best practices that you believe we should adopt?
3. What are opportunities and difficulties with getting different healthcare professionals to participate with social media tools.
4. What are some examples of successful use of social media to build communities – within or outside healthcare?
5. Ideas for better social media outreach within the practice community.
6. What are some good ways to track the success of our #IPChats and other social media endeavors?

Any other suggestions are welcome, too, but remember that this is going to be a regular event – occurring on days ending in the number 4 – so there’s lots of time to include ideas in upcoming chats if we don’t get to them this time around.

The CIHC Social Media Strategy is taking another step forward toward engaging the practice community through the magic of twitter!

The CIHC Social Media Strategy is taking another step forward toward engaging the practice community through the magic of twitter!

In a series of open, organized and regular meetings called #IPChat, CIHC and our friends and partners in the practice community will gather on twitter on Sunday July 4th at 8PM ET to discuss healthcare topics of interest to the participants.

These meetings – also called tweet ups – will happen every ten days or on a day ending in 4 (ie 4th, 14th, 24th). The tweets from each meeting will be archived and posted on the CIHC blog for everyone to read and comment on.

We are hoping that our friends already on twitter will take the time to participate in this project and help to showcase how amazing these social media tools are for communication, thought leadership and community building.

We’re hoping that by taking the opportunity to lead by example others in the practice community who have not yet begun to use social media will begin to see real value in these tools and take it upon themselves to sign up and begin to participate.

Here’s some of the ideas that we would like cover in the first week:

Opportunities and difficulties with getting different healthcare professionals to participate with social media tools.

Ideas for better social media outreach within the practice community.

Success stories of social media use within a healthcare context.

Whatever else the participants in #IPChat want to discuss!

We will be posting some walk-through demonstrations for how to participate for anyone that’s new to twitter or to tweet-ups in general in the next day or so.

Looking forward to taking our social media conversation to the next level and we hope that you will participate.

The Sydney Interprofessional Declaration

We the participants of the All Together Better Health 5 International Conference believe that a common global understanding of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and Care, brought about through interprofessional education and learning, is of fundamental importance to health care providers and users for the provision of high quality health care and better health outcomes.

The Sydney Interprofessional Declaration is premised on The World Health Organization’s definition of Health, that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

It underpins the call for action from the WHO Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice.

Through the following articles the Sydney Interprofessional Declaration will advance and strengthen the cause of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice across the globe. It was approved by and is issued on behalf of delegates present at the final plenary session of the All Together Better Health 5 Conference held in Sydney, Australia, 6th-9th April 2010.

Article 1

All users of health and human services shall be entitled to fully integrated, interprofessional collaborative health and human services.

Article 2

All health and human services work to create and strengthen a culture that promotes the delivery of contextual opportunities for interprofessional learning and collaborative team training. Interprofessional education and training for collaborative practice should be a core element of continuing professional development.

Article 3

Health worker education and training prior to practice shall contain significant core elements/learning domains of interprofessional education. These core elements/learning domains shall contain practical experiences, for example simulation. These core elements/learning domains for interprofessional education will be formally assessed.

Article 4

Between ATBH5 and ATBH6 the global interprofessional community will undertake to develop a globally agreed upon set of definitions and descriptions that capture interprofessional education, learning, practice and care.

Article 5

The global interprofessional community will work with the World Health Organization to implement the Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice.

WORLD FIRST IN INTERPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION

Australia played host to a world first in interprofessional collaboration in April as delegates from around the world competed in the first ever International Health Care Team Challenge (Inter HCTC). Hosted as part of the biannual All Together Better Health V (ATBH5) conference in Manly, Sydney, the Inter HCTC saw two multi nationality, interprofessional teams compete in front of an audience in a live demonstration of the cutting edge in interprofessional education (IPE). The challenge was held on the last day of the conference which ran from April 6-9 at the Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific.

The international event was a collaboration between The University of Queensland’s HealthFusion Team Challenge (HFTC), the University of British Columbia’s Health Care Team Challenge (HCTC), the Health Sciences Students’ Association of Canada (HSSA/AÉSS) and the Australian National Rural Health Students’ Network (NRHSN).

The inaugural Inter HCTC was the first time the popular Challenge event had ever been held at an international level and the first event of its kind to bring both mixed profession and multi nationality teams together. Each team was made up of a mix of students and professionals from a range of health backgrounds including nursing, dentistry, physiotherapy, health policy and occupational therapy. Participants came from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the USA.

The Judging Panel consisted of a consumer representative and several international delegates attending the conference.

In keeping with the Health Care Team Challenge model, both teams were presented with the same complex clinical case study and asked to present a complete management plan for a fictional patient under timed conditions. Once each team had presented, they were each given an extension question and asked to devise an adapted plan. Both teams utilized the full range of health practitioners in each team and even tapped into the audience’s expertise for additional resources, something that has only been trialed at the international event.

Audience members and judges were encouraged to observe the teams up close as they worked on their presentations. In addition to their management package, judges were asked to evaluate the teams on a number of other aspects including teamwork dynamics, collaboration and participation.

The competition was held as a demonstration event to showcase the strength and flexibility of the HCTC model in front of some of the world’s leading IPE experts.

Inter HCTC and HFTC Project Director; Dr Monica Moran praised everyone on their efforts, saying both teams provided a wonderful demonstration of the learning opportunities that can be developed from this kind of authentic learning experience.

“The judging panel and audience were transfixed when watching the teams at work. Many people took away ideas of how they can modify the model to suit their own particular practice or educational environment,” she said.

As a student-centred event, the Inter HCTC also attracted a lot of interest from those still forging their IPE careers. Fellow international student collaborator and event Master of Ceremonies, Luciano Di Loreto, was confident the event would continue to grow and expand in the coming years. “Going forward, I believe that more students and faculty will look to incorporate the Challenge within their interprofessional curricula as a unique vehicle to socialize, have fun, and learn simultaneously”, he said.

The HCTC model was originally pioneered by educators at the University of British Columbia over 20 years ago. Dr. Christie Newton, the current HCTC Planning Committee Chair at UBC comments on its sustainability; “its extracurricular format provides a safe opportunity for students to interact without the pressure of academia. Also, the event timing over lunch hour negates the need to align with the 12 to 15 different health professional curricula.” The event was first run at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia in 2007 where it is known as the HealthFusion Team Challenge (HFTC).
